"Mungiki, Touts Battle, 3 Hurt" by Waithera Karuri

("The East African Standard", January 17, 2002)

Three people were seriously injured yesterday after a fight broke out between Mungiki sect members and matatu men in Thika town. The three are fighting for their lives at the Thika District General Hospital.
Trouble started when Mungiki sect members stormed the Makongeni/Thika/Nairobi stage to control operations there. The sect members also blocked the matatu operators from operating at the stage.
However, the matatu operators resisted the move and attempted to flush the group out of the terminus.
A fierce fight that lasted one-and-a-half hours broke out between the two groups who fought using all manner of crude weapons.
The Thika police boss, Mr Charles Mukungi, denied that the fight was between the matatu operators and Mungiki sect members.
He said the matatu touts were fighting a group of people calling themselves "Freelance Matatu Group".
