The ESSWE is a learned society, established in 2005 to advance the academic study of the various manifestations of Western Esotericism from late antiquity to the present, and to secure the future development of the field. Western esotericism” is understood as a broad umbrella concept that covers a variety of religious currents including ancient hermetism and gnosticism, the so-called “occult sciences” (astrology, alchemy, magic), jewish and christian kabbalah, renaissance hermeticism, christian theosophy, rosicrucianism, esoteric freemasonry, illuminism, 19th-century occultism, and related currents up to and including contemporary “new age” spiritualities and a variety of new religious movements historically linked to the currents outlined above. Scholars in any of these fields, both from the perspective of the humanities and the social sciences, are welcome to apply for membership.
